THE DETAILS:

The Kura-Ara(k)s NGO Forum serves as a mechanism for collaboration among national and regionally active NGOs emphasizing cooperative action and improved civil society involvement in water resource governance.  By means of NGO Forum meetings, specific knowledge input will be generated on selected thematic issues for their integration with the water management sector. Based on discussions with key stakeholders in the project region, two themes were selected:

1) Biodiversity in water management, for 2012; and

2) Gender & public health in water management, for 2013

The NGO Forums are envisioned to contribute to a series of stakeholder specific activities planned for implementation by the UNDP/GEF Kura-Ara(k)s Project. These activities intend to raise awareness of the importance of river system health and the impacts of certain stakeholder groups on the environment.

The objective of the thematic NGO forum meeting on Biodiversity in 2012 is to bring together Armenian, Azerbaijani and Georgian national and regional NGOs active in biodiversity conservation, in the field of environmental education, and in natural resource management, to discuss the role of civil society in the management of the over all ecosystem health of the Kura Ara(k)s River Basin. Key issues for discussion include:

1.Aspects of including biodiversity concerns into land and water management decision making at the river basin level

2.Enhancement of biological data collection methodologies for EIA/ESIAs and SEAs, working towards approximation of international standards (e.g. EU, WB)

3.Potential opportunities for collaboration with partner NGOs for UNDP/GEF Kura Ara(k)s demonstration project activities on biodiversity related water issues

4.Increasing the active role of biodiversity NGOs in preparation and implementation of national IWRM plans and regional Strategic Action Plan for the Kura-Ara(k)s Basin.

The envisioned outcome of the 2012 Kura Ara(k)s Biodiversity NGO Forum would be a presentation (by a representative selected NGO) to be made at the project SC meeting in May 2012, for the SC to become aware of the linkages between biodiversity conservation and water of importance for consideration in future water projects. Additional outcomes may include increased coordination among participants in the areas of ecosystem management, coordination of with existing and planned projects in the region and an opportunity for stakeholders from civil society to play a more active role in regional project activities in the future.
